Program Title and Description:

Establish Yourself as an Artist

“How can I stay passionate about my photography business?” is a question many of us ask ourselves almost daily. Now more than ever, we have needed to cultivate ways to stay driven, creative and motivated in order to stand out in a saturated industry. But as image-makers, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to balance our passion in photography, with the need to increase sales.

Wendy will share with you changes she has made at Cellar Portrait Studio to drive sales and reinforce her artistic fire. How she’s increased the volume of family portrait sessions, while still maintaining a high number of senior sessions, childrens portraits and “play days.” That tailoring session and package pricing in her market has led to an increase in sales. And, how through all of this, has rejuvenated her creativity.

With the increase in family sessions, Wendy has made connections through her clients that have helped boost her artistic drive and invigorate Cellar Portrait Studio. She will showcase her newest venture, the “Dream to Extreme Portrait,” which materialized from the aforementioned changes to her business. Wendy will show you how she has begun creating art portraits/packages using ideas created between subject and photographer. She will discuss costumes, props, retouching and framing the finished piece.

She will start by going over her lighting, posing and concept of photographing a model. Images will be taken into CS for editing using backgrounds and textures. Wendy will also touch on creating your own Art/Tech competition prints.

Program Title and Description:

Wordpress for Photographers – The Cure for the Common Website

Most photographers who have even a passing interest in their online presence have heard of Wordpress, the popular “blog” platform. If you think it is just a blog, you’re missing out - it would be much more accurate to think of Wordpress as a complete solution for your entire website. An increasing number of photographers (as well as many businesses in other industries) are turning to Wordpress to be the backbone of their online presence, replacing their current websites with ones that are more secure, easier to manage, and easier to update with new content and features.

During this program, you can learn:

• Just what is Wordpress, anyways? And how do I set it up?
• Why our current Flash-based websites are quickly becoming a relic of the past.
• What are “themes” and how do I find one that works for me and my business?
• What is “open source” software? Why would I want to use it?
• What are “plugins”, and how do I use them in my website? Can you tell us some good ones?
• How do I navigate the administrative “back end” of the site and work with my content?
• Easy to implement backup solutions that protects your content from data loss.
• How do I move my current site to Wordpress?
• How do I integrate my Wordpress site with Facebook, Twitter and Google+?
• Why a Wordpress site can be very good for search engine rankings.
• What if I don’t think I can handle this by myself?
• Watch as we build a new, custom site in real time!- If time allows.

Watch how David brings in $1,000+ sessions in a small, economically strapped rural town FROM HIS HOME! No more Starbucks meetings for you!

Program #2

ROCKSTAR Seniors - Chasing (and Capturing) the Elusive HS Senior.

How do you grab the attention of the fickle 17/18 year old and MAKE them want to come to your
studio? David will assist you with marketing yourself to the elusive senior client and make
your studio the “HOT” studio to go to. Don’t wait for them to call, actively go get your clients.
David talks Senior Reps. Social media, marketing, client interaction, location selection,
photo processing and sales sessions. He also incorporates a hands-on demonstration of his
innovative “Live Viewing”, which has been instrumental to creating an unparalleled BUZZ
about his studio. This session will bust you out of the pack and make you the cool place to go.

Becoming Priceless: How I Booked 40 Weddings with $0 in Advertising

What I am talking about is becoming priceless. Creating an uncommon, unexpected experience for your customer. I am talking about bringing value that cannot be paid for by infusing your work with personal, genuine, and delightful details. Mastering this idea means that you will have to spend $0 on marketing yourself, and you will never again compete on price.

I will say that again. $0 Marketing Budget. Never compete on price again. Sounds like something that should require magic beans, does it not? Nope. In fact, most of what you will need is either cheap or free. If you do spend money it will not be on a mass targeted print ad. I cannot give you a recipe (its got to be unique and genuine, remember?), but I can share with you how I create an experience that sells itself, and makes my clients, both fans and friends and walking advertisements.

Kim LaFauce

Bio:

Kim LaFauce has been in love with photography since she was a little girl. After high school she went to Hawkeye Community College and earned her professional photography degree in Portrait and Photojournalism in 2003. She loved and worked at the Waterloo Courier as a staff photographer for two years before she pursued her passion in photographing weddings and children by moving back to her hometown of Burlington, Iowa where she opened her own boutique studio.

Kim started her business, KimAnne Photography, from the basement of her in-laws house while she began the construction of her studio. With the love and support of her husband Nick, they turned an old machine shop in downtown West Burlington into an upscale boutique studio. Kim is very blessed with a wonderful staff that shares the same love and passion for people and photography, and they contribute greatly to the success of her studio. The studio photographs most every type of clientele, but her passion is photographing weddings and babies and children.

Since graduating from Hawkeye, she has been honored to remain involved with the photography program by judging annual portfolios and hosting students for studio visits to learn about the portrait field. Kim enjoys sharing ideas with other photographers in the industry, as she has learned from so many other wonderful artists throughout her career as well. Kim has won marketing awards from PPI as well as other awards for her child and wedding photography. She is a member of PPA and is currently working towards her goal of receiving her Master’s degree.

Nothing is quite sweeter than a smile on a child’s face, and it was with this thought in mind that Kim and her staff decided to begin a charity event in 2008 that helped raise thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through capturing portraits
with Santa, this charity event has become such a success for her clients and has created such a reward knowing that we can help children with serious or chronic illnesses forget about their daily hospital routine and just be a child again. For the past four years, Kim has also been involved with NILMDTS, a nonprofit organization of photographers that capture timeless memories of stillborns to help bereaved parents in their grieving process. I have also been acting as a PPA Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) liaison for Illinois educating professional photographers throughout our state in addition to serving as a PPA councilor.

Program Title and Description:

“12 Elements to a Successful Business”

I am the entrepreneur and photographic artist at Onsight Photography located in the suburbs of Chicago. I started my studio in 2000 and in those twelve years have seen many adaptations in how I’ve developed and managed significant growth of my business, determining “what clients want”, as well as my personal growth and maturity as a photographic artist.

I started out for the better half of these years as a wedding photographer. It was not until I joined my local and state PPA affiliate that my eyes became “wide open” to the boarder view of the photographic world and deeper understanding and appreciation of the “photography as art” perspective.

As my expansive view of the photographic world continued to mature by getting involved in my local and state affiliates I continue to learn that professional photography is not just about images taken at weddings or during a portrait sessions itself. It is about capturing “life on life” moments on film [or in the digital age “the sensor”] and creating masterful storytelling images that capture their story about their relationships. It is about giving meaning to a family, a person, or even nature through our ‘lens’ and perspective. It is the perfect balance of both the technical aspects, as well as the artistic expression of an image that perfectly portrays our clients. Technical competence in lighting, posing, and composition, as well as other elements, provides power and impact of an image while the artistic expression of capturing the relationships, emotions and “license to be themselves” sets the foundation to every client’s story.

The reality is that competition exists everywhere and the photographic industry is no different. The answers to how you can succeed are covered in the “12 Elements to a Successful Business”. The “12 elements” includes developing a business philosophy and system designed around your individual style. I will share how to create images with the perfect blend of branding and marketing that drives educated clientele to your studio. Learn how to develop effective products that sell based on your photographic style consistent to your studio brand. Use your ‘camera-side’ manner during each photo session to ‘expose’ the client’s story by balancing both technical and artistic expressions to perfectly capture each and every relationship. Understanding this system of managing client relationships and expectations from initial consultation to the sales room will create the best opportunities to ‘close the deal’ effectively driving higher top line sales. At the end of the day our goal is to build successful businesses and the ‘bottom line’ defines the measure of success and I’ll share how to quantitatively measure your ‘return on investment’ to increase your margins to greater profitability in this demanding and competitive industry market.

Program Title and Description:

“After the Camera - Before the Print:
Photoshop as an Artistic Tool”

For many of us Photoshop has become more than a post-production tool to repair and enhance our photographs. For some of us Photoshop has become an all-new visual medium unto itself –a blank canvas from which we create an all-digital image. As Photoshop artists, we draw not only on the traditions of photography, but from the traditions of painting, drawing, graphic design and sculpture. This program will consider some of the issues (both technical and mental) that we confront as we evolve from being photographers to becoming digital artists. Thom will demonstrate techniques and approaches using Photoshop as an artistic tool – for discovery and exploration of your own personal, individual style –an approach that promotes “you” as the creator of the image, not the software.
